Logo

This is my Graphic Design Company Logo. I chose the name Spectrum Studios because in art you are to use the color spectrum to appeal to others. Therefore I felt spectrum studios was sufficient for the name.

Now, for the reason I chose a fish with some kind of liquid fins and tail was because I felt that it portrayed me. I like nature-like, soft things and soft, tranquil colors. Also, the fins can be seen as paint or water with spectrum in it.

Logo creation practice

All Hallows Eve Carnival Poster

In the making of this, value and contrast was a big problem. With the original "All Hallows Eve" text, the value is terrible. But over all I attempted to keep a constant theme with colors and font. Also, I sized the date to be much bigger than any of the other extra text besides the title. The things in the background are also sized to be small.
For contrast I mad sure the colors of the words were brighter and more noticeable. Same fonts and similar bats were set about the poster for repetition. Also the grave stones convey repetition. I aligned the bats to distance off in the background and create a line that moves forward. On proximity, I attempted to balance off the poster with the bats and the tree. the moon is off center to help create more balance too.

All Hallows Eve Text

While making this I learned a bit. I learned how different things that you can do with the apperance tab and many effects. We used transform and distort. Also, there was blending effects and everything. My favorite effect we used during this was the "Pucker and Bloat" effect for the spider web. It amused me greatly. :) I had reviewed how to move a gradient color because I forgot. :P

Water Pollution

   This is my pollution poster.
The elements I used in this are mostly line, size, and color. I used lines to help separate the text and the colors I used a softer greenish and bluish effect. I tried to make the feel of a more dirty. Also, I aligned the droplets into a very crooked line to make it disorganized or "dirty". Lastly for size I ensured certain words were bigger and bolder than others. "1.2 Trillion" seemed like a very stand outy part of the quote therefore I made it the largest. Also, The droplets in the background are smaller and opaque.

Chester! :)

This is my "woof" piece. The hardest parts of it was mostly just to adjust the direction of the fur. I was quite aggrivated trying to figure out how to make the fur go the correct direction and make sense. Also, I don't think anything was particularly easy. I enjoy making shapes with the pen tool though so that is easy. But, overall working with the tools in Adobe Illustrator is alrighty. :)

Typography Applied

Sailboats!

This is my lyric typography. It was done with the lines from the song "Sailboats" by Sky sailing. For these lyrics, I had a lot of trouble. I decided to add shape with the sailboat and stars. The lyrics state that the sailboats wish that they were stars; therefore, I felt that having these two shapes would add a little character. For color I decided to use navy blue, extremely light gray, and white.. The mood of this is soothing and soft. The color blue is associated with tranquility and stability. Also, the light grays and white were to express purity and innocence. The songs lyrics and music sound extremely innocent and soft. I also felt a night or sleeping emotion came with it. And because, horizontal lines are related to sleeping and relaxing therefore I added a terrrible horizon line. For the lyrics, I decided to have it in a vertical line but the sizes of the words differ. I put emphasis on the words "wish", "stars", and "goodbye" by making them the largest. Those words seemed to have the most meaning. With fonts I used two different types, poor richard which is a bit more traditional and straight and lucida handwriting italics which was much more curved and cursive. The words in lucida handwriting were softly, sky, dreams, and goodbye. They gave off a soft vibe therefore I felt they needed a softer font with the curved lines.
The lyrics of the songs are here: http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/skysailing/sailboats.html
It is the first 3 lines.

  12. Why is the use of color important in graphic Design?
Colors implement feelings and moods subliminally. A piece with something innocent and good with a black background completely changes the feeling of innocence and goodness and so, one must be aware of what colors they are using! :D
I don't know why there are random spacing between the lines... I can't fix it. :(

Bears :D

For our "word art" I chose to do the word "Bears". :) Originally it was going to be just bear... but that was not working out.
Anywho, I started with an outline of a tubby bear and then cut the shape up and shaped the slices into letters. the most difficult was most likely the E and the S. Also, when I hear the word "bear" I feel there is more emphasis on the "-ear" part of it so, I ensured that would be big! :D

I'm quite happy with my bear. I absolutely love bears. ♥

Art Quote

I used the quote "Earth without art is just eh."- unknown. I felt the emphasis should most the on the "earth" and "eh". I also felt that the "art" should be sort of emphasized too.. but I felt that it was less important. I made it still noticeable though.  Also I felt that "earth without art" should be angled to be semi diagonal to express that they are more exciting and "is just eh" should be horizontal to express that it is slightly boring.

The design elements I used is line with the horizontal and diagonal lines. The "earth without art" are slanted to be semi diagonal to express that they are more exciting while the "is just eh" was made to be horizontal to express that it was boring and unexciting. I also used a lot of size. The words that stood out most to me were sized to be much bigger.

This is not my favorite picture that I have made. It was much more difficult than I expected it to be. I didn't know how to make the piece interesting without colors or shapes. :(

TYPO

:D I got the transparency to work and look nice! ♥ I'm quite happy now.

This is my glyph monster above. It is suppose to be a Cyndaquil from Pokemon! :) I think it turned out great!!
But, my biggest issue was the color. Making it a light color like cream or white didn't look right. And making it dark on the blue background wasn't right either. Therefore I chose to make the background gradient into a lighter color into the middle.
Also I had trouble trying to create the shape occasionally so I used an outline layer to aid me. :D

Above is a picture of a cyndaquil. I though I would add a reference picture onto here too. Hehe. :)

To the left is a picture of my "artistic" impression. I wanted to use more colors to create my Cyndaquil because of my color problem. But, We were suppose to use black or white. :P

Typography Notes/Worksheet

Typography Worksheet:

1. Ascender line – the line at which determines the height of the ascender.
2. Baseline – a line that all the characters rest on.
3. Ascender height – the height of the upper part of a letter.
4. Cap height – the height at which capital letters reach.
5. Descenders – the lower portion of a letter that goes under the baseline.
6. Ascenders – the upper portion of a letter that goes past the mean line.
7. X-height – the distance from the top to the bottom of the main portion of a letter.
8. Cap line – the line at which expresses the top of a capital letter.
9. Mean line – the line that expresses the high at which the main portion of a letter reaches.
10. Descender line – this line expresses the length of which descenders reach.

Define Serif: Serifs are the little extra extensions on a typeface that make the readability smoother.
Define Sans-Serif: San-Serif is where the font lacks the extra extensions called the serif.
When do you use Antique Fonts?
Antiques are the fonts that have a long history and are used to evoke a period feel.
At most how many words should be Decorative Fonts at a time?
Rarely appropriate for more than three words at a time.
What does a script font resemble?
  Handwriting.
What element of design does script represent? (From elements lesson)
   It represents line.
Why use Symbol Fonts?
Can provide embellishments into text or create a complement to a specific font.

Define Typography:
Typography is the art and process of arranging letters and symbols and such for media purposes.
Why do designers need a solid foundation in typography?
Because everything you touch, see, and create is impacted by the use of writing styles and techniques.
Kerning:
Kerning is the space located between letters that may need to be adjusted to look pleasing.
Leading:
Leadings are the space between lines of text.
Tracking:
Where there are excessive white spaces throughout a text body creating “rivers” of white on the page.

When do you use the following?
Center Alignment: To draw attention (newspaper headers, book titles, and report titles)
Right Alignment: For professional looks (corporate business letters, return address labels, business cards, and other formal styled projects)
Justified Alignment: Creates perfect alignment on both left and right margins (mostly reserved for newspaper print and body text for text books <difficult to work with> )

Styling
What is remembered: good styling or bad styling?
Bad styling is more remembered and intrusive. Good styling is clean and easily read quickly therefore, not remembered.
What is legibility?
Legibility is the ability to easily read text.
Type size smaller than 7pt is:
  This is difficult to read.
Type size smaller than 3pts is:
  This is definitely not readable.
Type range for legible type is:
The type range is from 8-14 pt.

What do you use for long passages?
For long passages, it is best to use Serif fonts.
What case do we use for Body?
Upper- and lower- case because the irregular shapes make legibility easier.
What is measure?
This refers to the width of the text column.
What can you tell me about Ragged Edges?
These are uneven lines caused by a left or right alignment. (one side is straight and the other is uneven from different sized words)

Text as Image
What are some ways text can be used and what font types do you use for each?
Text is used in typography- art with words. In this the texts can be used to exhibit moods and feelings with words and a picture. The fonts can be serif or san serif, natural or geometric, blocky or thin, and densely packed or spaced. All this creates different feelings.

Choosing and Using Type:
**Read ALL of it.  Answer the following:
Why is choosing and using the right font important? (Two reasons)
  1.  Type is an unconscious persuader. It is emotional at a subliminal level.
  2.  Type is also expresses who you are and what your text is.
What are the two most important things to remember?
    1.  Type is on the page to serve text. Text should be made easy to read and create a suitable background. Type should NOT overpower the text.
   2.  There are no good and bad typefaces; there are just appropriate and inappropriate typefaces. Think about the audience and who the reader will generally be to choose the appropriate typeface.
What is appropriate? What do you have to consider?
When taking typeface into consideration you must look at the audience and the feeling a text should have. If a the main concept of a text is to be easy to read for anyone, then a font with a large x-height should be used. Also, you can look at feelings such as casual and friendly. Or themes such as traditional can be used too.

Tell me the rules:  (there are 10)
  1.  Body text should be between 10-12pt and 11pt for best printing. <ensure to use the same font looks such as typeface, type size, and leadings>
  2.  Use enough leadings (line-spacing). <always add at least 1-2pts. To the typesize>
  3.  Don’t make lines too short or too long.
<optimum size: over 30 characters and under 70 character.>
  4.  Make paragraph beginnings clear. <use indent or block style for paragraphs (only one).>
  5.  Use only one space after a period, not two.
  6.  Don’t justify text unless you have to. <hyphenations if you do.>
  7.  Don’t underline ANYTHING. <especially not headlines or subheads.>
  8.  Use italics instead of underlines.
  9.  Don’t set long blocks of text in italics, bold, or all caps. <harder to read.>
  10.  Use more space above headlines and subheads than below them <avoid setting them in all caps.>

Dirty Droplet

To make this droplet, I followed a tutorial with about 10 steps.
In the processes, the gradient and transparency tools were used constantly. We also used the ellipse tool to make everything on here. The drop shape was a ellipse tool then adjusted the ellipse to create an egg like shape. We used a point to corner adjustment. There was a lot of shape cutting. The part I liked most was creating the little particles inside of the droplet. We created a circle and turned it into a scattered brush effect. There we just had to played with the brush until we got the wanted design. Also, I played with the transparency when using the speckle brush. It was a very fun little design to follow. I think I spent too much time on it though.

Soccer player!

We used a tutorial to create a basketball player. But, because I am a rebel I decided that I wanted to create a Soccer player instead. :)

To create this we used Adobe Illustrator and this website tutorial for simple shapes.

The tools I used varied greatly.

First off, we used the ellipse and square tools to create the face.
Often we used the shape builder tool (which I personally really enjoy) to cute shapes into the shape you want.
There was also a spiral tool for the hair that came from the line tools. We densed up the line by using the width tool.
Another useful tool was the reflect tool which allowed you to flip the image how you needed it to look. :)
Ooh! And the distort tool allowed you to reshape a object to look how you want them too.
Lastly, I used the transparency tool to create shadows and highlights.

Beaches

This is my sunny picture the elements of design while experimenting with Adobe Illustrator! :D
>:D I added a beach ball and umbrella!! Hehe.

In the picture I attempted to use the Elements of Design to create a calm, warm, and welcoming picture.

The elements I tried to use were:

I created wavy lines around the sunny create a look of radiation and they are wavy to continues a soft and calming picture. Additionally I avoided vertical lines because I wanted a calming and random picture.

The shapes I used are mostly rounded to help with the soft and serene mood.

The colors I used are very pastel and soft with a warmer tone to show that it is a sunny day. The pastel creates a calm, soft feel too.

Lastly, I attempted to add texture in the clouds and waves to make the picture more interesting. But the texture is very soft and not extremely eye catching to keep a soft feel.

Elements of Design

Elements of Design

The elements of design help add emotion and guidance for the eye in design.

This has lines that help add
more interest to the original texture.

Line:
A linear mark that can defines shapes and patterns. They help guide the viewers eye towards a point with the direction it moves. Things that can characterize a line is width, length, direction, focus (fuzzy, sharp), and feel (curvy, jagged, etc.).

These geometric objects express a form
with smooth surfaces. Also, these objects
 express a variety of sizes.

Shape and Form:
Shape is generally a 2D object that makes a pattern or pictures.
Form is generally 3D object that helps make patterns or pictures. This has volume or mass.
Either of these can be natural or geometric for different designs and patterns.

Size:
Size expresses the contrast between objects. Some may be extremely small while others are ginormous. This helps add variety to a design.

This contains a wonderful example  of
color with the variety of greens and
texture with it's painter's canvas feel.
Texture:
The visual and tactile look of an surface. Some objects look smooth or rugged. Textures can generally be seen and expressed by having shading and lighting.

Color:
Colors are the substance of an object created from the reflection of light. These colors can vary from vibrant to dull colors. Factors that help determine a color are brightness, saturation, and hue.

Value:
The brightness or darkness quality of a piece of art or pattern.  This is generally determined with contrast. Value help determine what is in a picture.
